Register now for NAJGA’s last 2019 Regional Workshop to join Japanese specialists in a garden called “one of the most original” in America.”* Hosted by Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville, Tennessee, the event focuses on renovations to their Shomu-en (Pine Mist Garden) led by a Japanese gardening team sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (MLIT). The two days feature contextual lectures, renovation observation, hands-on learning opportunities and a sketch workshop to re-envision sections of Shomu-en. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about Japanese gardens at the historic Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. Observe Japanese and American collaboration in action. History of the Japanese garden at Cheekwood


9:15am- 9:45am: Overview of the MLIT Delegation's Renovations - Sadafumi Uchiyama


10:00am- 12:00pm: Observation: Pruning & Stone Setting - Sadafumi Uchiyama & MLIT Delegation

Observation with some hands-on opportunities


12:15pm- 1:15pm: Lunch


1:15pm- 3:15pm: Sketch Workshop - Sadafumi Uchiyama

Participants will have the opportunity to re-envision some sections of the Shomu-en, Cheekwood’s Japanese Garden.


3:15pm- 3:30pm: Break


3:30pm- 4:30pm: Panel Discussion on Renovation 

How is the intent of the original designer taken into account when renovating a garden? There are many examples where this has been ignored to the detriment of a renovation. Hear from panelists about how this has been done successfully.


4:30pm- 5:00pm: Cultural Demo - Presenter TBD


5:00pm- 6:00pm: Networking

9:30am- 11:45am: Workshop: Bamboo Fence Building -  Sadafumi Uchiyama & MLIT Delegation

This will be a hands-on workshop during which participants will learn to construct a bamboo fence.
