Intuitively, we might feel that a garden, especially a Japanese garden, might be an appropriate setting for a healing environment.  This session will explore some ideas as to why this might be the case, using research ideas from Attention Restoration Theory as a source. How the characteristics of Japanese Garden Design contribute to the success of such gardens will be discussed, using examples of real gardens constructed in the Hospice and Hospital environments by the Japanese Garden Society in the UK.
