Conference Hotel:  Hilton Portland, 921 S.W. Sixth Avenue, Portland OR

For over 1,500 years, Japanese garden art has developed throughout Japan’s islands and then across six continents.  Join us for an international gathering of Japanese garden professionals, enthusiasts, academics and students to address our shared challenges in creating, adapting, renovating, maintaining and restoring Japanese gardens around the world.   This conference will explore:

  • relevance and functions of Japanese gardens in different settings throughout the world
  • training in technical skills and cultural context for gardeners
  • successes and issues in adapting to local conditions, restoration, and renovation
  • defining the identity of Japanese gardens in the 21st century
  • reaching new audiences

The conference will feature individual speakers and panels with simultaneous translation in Japanese and English as well as hands-on workshops in gardening skills.  Scholarships will be provided for up to 50 students and beginning practitioners.   Spend three days in vibrant downtown Portland with abundant museums, gardens, restaurants, shops, parks, and mass-transit.  Some events will also be held at the renowned Portland Japanese Garden.   Extend your stay to explore Oregon’s scenic wonders such as Willamette Valley wine country, Mt. Hood, Columbia Gorge, Oregon coast, and Cascade Mountains.
